Hello! My name is Rachel Sweeney and I am an Artist and Wellbeing Workshop Facilitator from South Wales.

​

​For the majority of my art practice, I work three-dimensionally, using a wide range of materials and experimenting with texture. The type of artwork I create involves the use of resin, patchwork upholstered furniture and sculpture making. I try to use a wide range of art media such as paint, needle work with fabrics, clay, plaster and recently the use of ICT software. My artwork always has a story behind it, whether that be my own or someone else’s. I seek ways of portraying these stories so that those experiencing my work can perhaps relate to them, or be reminded of their own stories. Incorporating a multi-sensory approach provides opportunity for this interpretation. I seek to stimulate the senses, provoking positive and even sometimes negative responses, reflecting the full range of emotions and never shying away from a critical approach to practice.

​Within my facilitation practice, I enjoy working with people of all ages and believe in both equality and differentiating in order for each participant to have the opportunity to participate in my sessions. At the core of my practice is my desire to develop participants’ independence, and support them to realise their own unique artistic flair. I encourage social interaction with their fellow workshop participants in addition to the wider community. I often adopt a non-directive approach to facilitate this and give unconditional positive regard, modelling the development of participants’ own unconditional positive self-regard.

​I have worked in education settings with children and young adults with physical impairments and learning disabilities. I have also worked in residential facilities for adults and older adults who also have physical impairments and learning disabilities. These experiences have developed my practice in an amazing way over the years and I am ready for the opportunities that lie before me.
